What is Rhynophyma?

Rhinophyma is a condition causing the nose to increase in size, particularly at the tip, creating a bulbous shape. It is more prevalent in men than in women. The exact cause of rhinophyma is not fully understood, but it is commonly associated with rosacea.

People once believed it was caused by excessive alcohol consumption, but we now know that is not the case. In the past, people afflicted with this condition had to contend with being labeled alcoholics – even those who did not drink a drop! In fact, the rate of rhinophyma among heavy and among non-drinkers is identical. Although science has debunked the myth, some patients still encounter a lingering social stigma. Additionally, the cosmetic effects can have a devastating impact on a person’s confidence, and the shape of one’s nose cannot be easily disguised with cosmetics.

The most common signs of rhinophyma include:

  • Yellowish, waxy looking surface
  • Redness
  • Excess oil glands
  • Increasingly bulbous nose shape

Treatment options

Depending on the severity of the rhinophyma, surgical revision may be recommended. The nose is sculpted to a natural, attractive size and shape. Depending on the situation, one of several revision techniques may be used. Often, a combination of techniques is used, to remove excess tissue and then cosmetically restore the area. Some of the most common include:

  • Laser surgery (a laser is used in place of a traditional scalpel)
  • Excision
  • Cryosurgery (use of cold temperature to remove tissue)
  • Skin grafting
  • Skin resurfacing
