What is Rhynophyma?
Rhinophyma is a condition causing the nose to increase in size, particularly at the tip, creating a bulbous shape. It is more prevalent in men than in women. The exact cause of rhinophyma is not fully understood, but it is commonly associated with rosacea.
People once believed it was caused by excessive alcohol consumption, but we now know that is not the case. In the past, people afflicted with this condition had to contend with being labeled alcoholics – even those who did not drink a drop! In fact, the rate of rhinophyma among heavy and among non-drinkers is identical. Although science has debunked the myth, some patients still encounter a lingering social stigma. Additionally, the cosmetic effects can have a devastating impact on a person’s confidence, and the shape of one’s nose cannot be easily disguised with cosmetics.
The most common signs of rhinophyma include:
- Yellowish, waxy looking surface
- Redness
- Excess oil glands
- Increasingly bulbous nose shape

Prevention
If detected in the earliest stages, this condition may be controllable. Thickening of the skin caused by rosacea can often be halted or slowed with a combination of therapeutic treatments and trigger avoidance. Rosacea is a complex condition requiring a multi-faceted treatment plan.
